Who gave you biopsy results?

I had a mole biopsy taken for suspected melanoma. The results are back but o have to go back to the dermatology unit for them. My letter says

NURSE- skin surveillance results.

which I take it that rather than see a doctor/consultant it will be a nurse. Does this mean the results will be good news, or can nurses also give results that you have cancer?

thanks in advance,

  • Hello Jackie and thanks for your post

It can be stressful waiting to be seen at the hospital to find out what may be the matter. It's not unusual for results to go to a Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT ) meeting where a number of different health professionals including nurses meet to discuss what the next steps ( if any) are. It's not just cancer cases that are discussed, but also ones where a decision needs to be made about whether more tests need to be carried out.

I don't think anyone can presume that because they are seeing a nurse that they don’t have anything to worry about. Everything will hopefully be fine, but you need them to confirm this for you.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Jackie. I was just wondering if you had an update on how your appointment went?

  • Hi,

My results were given by the skin cancer nurse (skin surveillance nurse) I was diagnosed with Stage 1a Melanoma and have since had a wide local incision, which I'm told removed all cancer! I just have check ups now every 12 weeks for a year.

  • Thank you so much for replying.

Sorry to hear it was confirmed melanoma but glad they've managed to get it all. I received a letter yesterday with an appointment saying the same thing so have gone into full panic mode with not knowing what to expect at the appointment.

  • Thank you, I totally understand how you feel, I have never felt anxiety like it in my whole life waiting for the results.
I hope your wait isn't too long, I have heard of other hospitals giving the news be it good or not so good from the nurse.

wishing you the very best results!
