Endoscopy

I have two questions  I'm waiting to see my GP I've had black goo in my stools since November I've already had a gastroscopy in February that didn't locate the bleed and they discharged me with no follow up  I decided to let the 3 months supply of ppis do there thing but still in the same position also had a fit test in February that I never got told the results of so not entirely sure this black goo is blood or if it's even black half the time

My questions if my GP wants to send me for a colonoscopy which is likely can I ask for a capsule endoscopy first. ? I don't want a repeat of the gastroscopy where I get discharged with no real answers again I know of NHS hospital few miles away that does capsule endoscopies  but it's not my local hospital

Second question is about moviprep  I know I won't be able to finish two litres can I ask the endoscopy clinc to give me something else if I've never attempted it before  I know I will fail to get it all down I'd be much happier with less liquid

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me

  • Hello

Thanks for posting a question for us. I don't know if you would be considered suitable for a capsule endoscopy, but there is no harm in asking your doctor about it.  There may be some advantages to going straight for a colonoscopy.  If they find a polyp during this procedure they may be able to remove it straight away and if there are other areas that need to be biopsied they can often do these at the same time. They can't do this with a capsule endoscopy. So the best thing to do would be to talk it through with your GP.

If you think you might have difficulty taking the bowel preparation prior to the colonoscopy speak to the team at the unit where they are doing it to see what their advice is.

I am sorry we cant be more specific than this but as your questions relate very much to your individual circumstances you are better off talking to the professionals directly involved in your care.

I hope it all goes well.

    Take care

    Martin
