Super Scared!!! Mum gets mammogram callback

My mum went to have her mammogram done a few weeks ago. And on Tuesday, we got the callback letter. A nurse called the following day and asked twice whether someone would go with her for more tests on this coming Tuesday. The nurse even said it was very important for her to do so. The nurse also asked about whether she'd had any operations before and whether she was allergic to anything.

My mum is just in her mid-60s. She is not very old. I am super scared now. I have not been able to sleep very well for the past few days. I have been googling like crazy. I know most people who get called back turn out just fine. But being told to bring someone with you is also practically a diagnosis. How bad is the situation we are talking about for the nurse to ask these questions even before more tests to be done? Are we expecting operations already? Thanks in advance.

  • Hello there

I appreciate this must be a worrying time for you and your mum but no one on here can tell you anymore than you know already I'm afraid.

As you have said yourself most women who are recalled after a mammogram won't go on to be diagnosed with breast cancer but if an area of suspicion is highlighted it does need further investigating.

The breast unit may wish to repeat the mammogram as well as carry out an ultrasound and might want to take some biopsies to give them more information.

Avoid reading too much into what has been said or asked prior to your mum's appointment and wait and see what happens tomorrow. As I say it is only going to be the doctors at the appointment who can tell you and your mum what exactly the matter is and what needs to happen next.

Take things one step at a time for now and if you do attend the appointment with your mum make sure you or your mum ask any other questions you may have.

I hope it goes well and that everything will be okay.

Get back if needed or call the helpline on 0808 800 4040, Mon-Fri 9-5 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi,

    Thank you for your message.

And good news. I went with my mum to the follow-up assessment. It turned out it was just a cyst. What a relief!!!

In hindsight, perhaps, I shouldn't hv read and thought too much about what the nurse'd asked and said in the call. But my experience, I guess, proves that it is not always bad news if you are told to bring someone with you.

    Good health
