My mum has cancer

I never tought to find myself here, but I need ro connect with people who know more than me.My mum lives back home and was diagnosed with advanced cancer( I am not sure what stage)started in her colon it has now spread she has metastasis in her liver , she also has that liquid in her stomach. The doctors back in Romania and the way medicine has advanced, I refuse to believe that there is nothing more that can be done. They do not want to perform chemotherapy because they say there is no point .I want to know what options I would have if I was to bring her to the UK.I am sorry my message is so long, and maybe this is not the right place to talk about it but I am desperate

  • Hello Clau33 and thanks for posting,

I am very sorry to learn about your mum and can understand you wanting to explore her options.

I'm afraid I can't tell you if a UK cancer specialist would disagree with the doctors in Romania, I'm sorry to say that they might not.

You might be able to to pay to get a private second medical opinion in the UK or another country. I think this is sometimes possible before a patient travels so that they do not need to if no further treatment is offered. A medical referral is often needed to get a second opinion or a medical summary of what has happened so far. Unfortunately private health care is expensive.

Bear in mind that even in the UK, there are situations what a doctor would be telling a patient that further treatment won't work. Despite, all that modern medicine can do, sadly some cancers can still become resistant to treatment.

I expect it is very difficult for you to be far away from your mum. It might help if you can talk things over with her doctors.

If you want to talk this over with us, please ring on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
