Heavy bleeding after smear, been told to go to A&E, v.scared

I had my smear and had some light spotting which now has turned into serious cramping needing a hot water bottle and painkillers and heavy bleeding, I'm not due on for another 12days. I've been told this isn't normal. My gp has no one to talk to me as too busy, I've been told by a womens clinic to go to a&e!?..im so confused and worried as last timei had none of this, was done in a different clinic. I'm worried the nurse has injured me or I have something there. There is no one to turn too other than going to sit in a&e. Can anyone please help, should it just calm down?

  • I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I've been through the menopause but when I had my very last smear, a few months ago, it hurt quite a lot and I was sore down there for quite a while. The worst experience of a smear I've ever had.

It sounds to me that the smear may have caused this but better safe than sorry and go to A&E.

    Keeping everything crossed for you.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Bleeding following a smear test is quite common and there can be many causes which can be explained at this link

This should settle down over the next few days, but if it continues it's best to make an appointment to see your GP to get checked out.

I hope this improves for you soon.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
