Leiomyoma/GIST waiting for biopsy results

Hi,

I had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy on Monday this week. (Gastroscopy was not pleasant!!) They found an ulcerated lesion 4cm I'm my stomach which the Dr thinks is either a leiomyoma or a GIST. I have a CT booked for Sunday. They also found 10 polyps and thickened folds during the colonoscopy! All in all, sounds a bit of a mess!!
I'm worried about the tumour and wondered if anyone has had anything like this and what treatment etc they've had. I'm also wondering why they are doing the CT? Are they looking to see whether things have spread? The Dr doing the exams was not very friendly or forthcoming with any info!!

I'm 43, fit, a vegetarian and don't drink much so I'm really surprised they've found all of This!! I'm worried as I have young children!!

  • Hello R and thanks for posting,

GISTs and gastric (stomach) leiomyomas are rare so I doubt if anyone else will come along and post specifically about these conditions, but I think everyone appreciates how difficult it is to cope with uncertainty while waiting to have tests and hear the results.

I think the CT scan is just to take another look at your stomach from a different perspective to see if this type of  X-ray imaging sheds more light on whatever it is that has been spotted during the gastroscopy.

If you can, try and keep an open mind for now about what this is going on. Our general advice to people having investigations is not to spend too much time on line looking things up as this seldom provides much in the way of answers.  Try and think of things to help you to cope with the inevitable stress of not knowing and having to wait - distraction is usually a useful coping strategy.

I hope you find out more soon.

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays from 9-5.

    Best wishes,
