diabetes & breast cancer

Hello. This is the first time I have ever used a forum but it seems a safe and frank way of discussion so here goes.

I am 61 years old & was diagnosed with invasive ductal cancer DCIS 3 weeks ago.I had wide local incision & lymph node excision a week ago & am waiting for my treatment plan. All a bit of a shock & it feels a bit unreal.

I have read in the information leaflet given to me that breast calcifications can be caused by diabetes( I have had type 1 diabetes for 30 years). Is this the case?

  • Hello Bathsehba-1960 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that about your diagnosis and can understand it was a shock. I hope you are doing ok after your operation.

Calcifications can develop anywhere in the breast tissue and sometimes they occur in blood vessels (arteries).  This type of calcification is fairly common and can increase with age. Some research studies noticed that calcification in the arteries was seen more often in people with diabetes - I think this is what the leaflet is referring to, so it is the case.
