Very worried about painful and changed mole

Hi I am a 25 year old ex sunbed user as they cleared up my psoriasis. After a lot of pain around my mole I noticed it had gone black in the middle and has notches on it. I was referred to dermatology and they looked at it through the dermoscope and said it was not cancerous. This was about a week ago now however my anxiety has not settled as the pain is progressing, all around the mole feels like raw skin and when I press it or the area surrounding it feels like muscular pain. I mentioned this to the dermatologist but she said that this was not common with melanoma. I'm extremely worried as I also have pins and needles across my arms and night sweats. My gp did my bloods and everything was normal but I can't help but feel like there is something wrong because of all of these symptoms. I'd appreciate any help and advice as I'm extremely anxious and it has been affecting my day to day life.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

Your dermatologist has reassured you that your mole is not cancer. They are very experienced in assessing moles.

I can appreciate that this is difficult when we become rather anxious about our health. Of course worrying about health is not something that most of us think about on a day to day basis but when we are anxious or a little depressed in mood generally, then health can become overly focused on.

So if you have not already done so, you do need to speak to your GP about your underlying anxiety about your health. As this can escalate and become overwhelming and difficult to navigate on a daily basis. We can develop symptoms as a result of being in an anxious state all the time.

You could look at the NHS Every Mind Matters website,

    www.nhs.uk/.../

as it has some useful information about managing anxiety. There is also an organisation called Anxiety UK which may be able to help.

I hope that this is helpful,

    Best wishes,
