Urgent 2 week referral cancelled by a MDT team

Can anyone please help as very concerned?

After other health issues that resulted in me having CT scans. During these scans, they detected an area of increased density in the right upper lobe of my lung.

I was given a follow-up scan 3 months later which showed the area to still be present but had slightly reduced in size.

I was then given a 9 month follow up which has come back with the following: "The subpleural area of ground glass shadowing in the right upper lobe persists and is larger when compared with the last scan. it measures 18mm (3/21). There is no solid component within it.

Although this could represent an area of scarring, occasionally early adenocarcinomas can have a similar appearance.

Recommend a 2ww appointment to the chest physicians for further assessment and management.

I must point out I have Lupus.

It has now been 2 weeks since this and I have not received my 2ww appointment. Today I called and chased up my appointment only to be told the referral for a 2ww has been cancelled by an MDT meeting.

How can they just cancel this without seeing me or doing further tests? I have something growing in size regardless if it is an adenocarcinoma or scaring surely we need to find out what it is and why it's getting bigger.

I thought it was my right to be seen under a 2ww appointment for further tests. I am very concerned that this MDT team have not taken into consideration my lupus and also how can they overrule a Consultant Radioligist.

Any advice will be very well appreciated as I am naturally very concerened.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the concern that it is causing you.

I am afraid I don't know why they have cancelled discussing your case at the MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team meeting). It may be that they reviewed your results again and decided that they were fairly sure that it was not a cancer but of course I can't be sure. I am sure that if they did have concerns your case would have been discussed.

I can understand that when the possibility of a cancer was originally mentioned you were understandably keen to have your results reviewed in a formal meeting.

I wonder whether you could try and contact the secretary of the chest physician to see if you could find out more. The hospital will have written to your GP informing them about any follow up and how your chest would be monitored. They may decide to do another scan in the next few weeks to see if there are any further changes but of course I can't be sure.

Try and see what information you can get so you have more of an understanding about the decisions they have made.

I do hope that you know more soon.  If you would like to discuss any of this with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to give us a ring. We are here Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
