Concerned

After having covid my thumb nail developed a brown vertical faint line. This got wider, made up of a few vertical lines.  My nail then developed a raised vertical ridge underneath the the lines. This has now become painful. Ive been referred to have the nail removed and biopsies taken.

Ive been told by consultant to prepare for pain following this procedure.

Im feeling anxious and stressed about both the pain and results. If you have had this procedure im interested to hear from you, especially if you have had results, either negative or positive.

Also any tips, for coping following the procedure.

Thank you for your help and time to reply, in advance.

  • Hello there

I appreciate this must be a worrying time for you but try and take things one day at a time for now.

You are asking for other people who have gone through something similar to post here and hopefully they will pop something on here but you might also want to post this on a different area as this is in the Ask the Nurses section.

Symptoms can be the result of various causes so whilst this needs to be looked into there could be a reason other than cancer.

Whilst you will be given anaesthetic to numb the nail bed during the procedure I think it is common for people to experience pain for a couple of days following this. Usually pain killers are advised and these should help with any pain or discomfort you experience.

Needing to have tests and waiting for the results is never easy but keeping yourself busy and your mind on other things can make it a little more manageable.

Do get back if you would like to or you are welcome to call us on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5.

Wishing you all the best and hope you will be okay.

    Take care

    Naomi
