Advanced Prostate Cancer

Hello,

I'm so worried about my Dad. He has prostate cancer which spread to the bone and we found out around a month ago that it is now in his spine. His consultant said he needs to have 10 rounds of chemotherapy.

Dad has had one session and his health is declining rapidly. Some symptoms I'm sure are from the chemo but some he had prior.

Symptoms are loss of control of bladder, can barely walk, swollen legs, no appetite, very tired (falls asleep mid conversation). I'm just so worried that his body won't be able to cope with 10 rounds. We are having to cancel blood test/injection appointments this week as there is just no way he is up to that. We will also call the MacMillan nurses tomorrow to talk through all of the above.

Has anyone been through anything similar? Do they stop treatment if they think you are too poorly?

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to hear about your dad and appreciate this must be a worrying time for you all.

It is really important that you speak to the specialist team today so they can assess your dad's symptoms properly. They may be due to the treatment or the cancer itself but it is crucial that something called spinal cord compression is also ruled out.

Spinal cord compression can cause a loss of control of bladder and bowels and mobility issues but is a medical emergency that needs urgent treatment. Of course I can't say for sure that this is definitely what is causing your dad's symptoms but his team do need to be made aware as soon as possible.

Patients do need to be relatively well to have or continue with treatment and sometimes treatment is paused until someone is well enough to have more. If it is the chemotherapy that is causing side effects then often these can be managed or the dosage changed.

I hope your dad is seen soon and you know more soon.

Get back in touch if needed.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
