Skin cancer

Hi I've recently been diagnosed with skin cancer, I'm waiting for an operation to remove it from my chest and they are watching a dark pigment on my eyelid, it's been a shock but my worry now is I have a growth on my back too, is it normal for it to appear else where on my body in such a short space of time? Also should I wait till I'm called for the operation or should I contact the hospital about this new growth? Thanks Nightstar

  • Hello Nightstar and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern with the skin cancer on your chest. The other areas you mention are not necessarily anything related to it, but may still be areas of concern. Even if they turn out to be cancer they are not necessarily a spread from the one on your chest, unfortunately having one skin cancers puts you at risk of developing others.

I am not sure if telling the hospital about the one on your back means they will bring you in before the surgery you have planned. You could ask, but even if you have to wait till then to show it to the doctor that will be fine.

I think it is all too easy to be more observant of your skin when you have a skin cancer diagnosed. So, it may be the case that the one on your back is nothing serious.  Whatever happens you will get it checked out.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,
