Abnormal Smear

Just wanted to ask, had a smear a few years ago and detected HPV. I have very high anxiety regarding anything that is connected to this. I had a coil fitted, cells removed, polyp removed all under spinal block 2 years ago. Follow up last year still detected trace of HPV. This year no mention of HPV but abnormal cells so procedure booked. Have experienced unusual bleeding, pain, trying not to jump to conclusions or think Cancer. Any thoughts?

  • Hello Hazelnut12 and thanks for posting,

I am not sure what sort of procedure has been booked, possibly a colposcopy, but bear in mind that cervical screening is all about prevention.  I think these abnormal looking cells need to be looked into but that doesn't necessarily mean they will amount to anything serious.

Waiting for tests is invariably unsettling if not worrying, but unfortunately there isn't a way around it. Do your best to keep an open mind for now and think along the lines of getting checked out to be on the safe side.

If you haven't mentioned the pain and unusual bleeding to anyone, let them know at the procedure or tell your GP.

Feel free to give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
