HPV

First post...

I'm 60, had cervical screening 2020 (first one in 10 years, won't go into why, suffice to say husband was having multiple affairs) found hpv and abnormal cell, follow up colposcopy was clear. Screening in 2021 found hpv still present but no abnormal cells. I was expecting to be called annually but I've been informed it will now be every 3 years. I queried this with my GP surgery but was told the information l was given was correct, even showed me a flow chart.

This just isn't sitting right with me, surely if the hpv virus (probably passed on from ex husband) is still present, wouldn't it be prudent to screen annually rather than wait 3 years. Can anyone offer any advice please.

  • Hello Pippa2000 and thanks for posting,

The NHS screening programme is underpinned by research data and evidence. The general thinking is that after picking up a new HPV infection, it takes a long time (more than 3 years) for a cervical cancer to develop if the HPV persists which most of the time it doesn't. Some sources say in women with a normal immune system it can take as long as 15-20 years for cervical cancer to develop after picking up HPV (if it does).  I think this is probably what lies behind the flowchart recommendation you were shown for 3 yearly smears but this would also depend on having an ok colposcopy and ok looking cells from the screening brush sample.

There is the option to have private screening in-between what the NHS offers. I am not in a position to recommend it, but it could be something to consider and talk over with your GP if you remain uneasy.

Feel free to give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are here weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,
