Colposcopy biopsy results - confused

Hi

After showing abnormal cells on my recent smear I underwent a colposcopy 5 weeks ago. I was given a LLETZ at the time and a biopsy taken to remove the CIn3. The doctor confidently said it didn’t look like there was anything to worry about as the procedure would do what it needs to and it didn’t look concerning.

Today have received a letter with my biopsy results and am confused and very scared. It says biopsy results show inflammation only and the results will be sent for a 2nd review and my management plan discussed at the next multidisciplinary meeting

I’m now petrified it’s cancer but thought it had been dealt with by the LLETZ

i can’t get hold of the hospital and no doctor appointments are available

I’m  41 and have kept up to date with all my smears.

  • Hi ET123

Looks to me that you have nothing to worry about, the biopsy showed only inflammation and not cancer, in my experience a second opinion is a formality. x

  • Thank you for responding. I'm still petrified though and cannot get hold of anyone at the hospital to explain it which makes it so much worse

  • Sorry your still feeling anxious, honestly if I got that letter I wouldn't be worried. Why don't you contact your GP and ask them to explain the results to you as they will have correspondence from the hospital?

  • Hello ET123 and thanks for posting,

I don't think you need to be scared. Remember cervical screening is all about preventing cervical cancer in the first place, but the tests involved can cause a lot of worry. I don't think it helps that screening is a bit more complicated than it first appears to be.

Inflammation is just that and not cancer, so nothing alarming has been seen and the CIN3 hasn't been confirmed. When a biopsy report doesn't match what was expected like this it is routine to review the results at the multidisciplinary team meeting. The biopsy is taken to confirm the colposcopy impression but sometimes it doesn't.

The thing is that everything will be reviewed to be on the safe side so try not to worry too much. What has happened doesn't suggest you have cervcial cancer, it is more about a discrepancy in the different tests used in screening which can sometimes occur.

Hopefully you will hear back from the meeting soon and they will be able to reassure you.

Give us a call if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday (but not Bank Holidays) .

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Thank you so much for your reponses. I finally got to speak to the clinic this afternoon who confirmed it was a difference in the smear compared to the biopsy and might actually be a down grade of severity but they need to double check.

thank you for your support, it really did help
