Prostate cancer

In November of 2021 my doctor referred me with a psa of 6.3. In January of this year following ct, mri and cysyocopy scans I was dignosed with prostate cancer ct3. A recent biopsy showed grade 9 cancers. I am now awaiting a bone scan. Question has the long delay in starting treatment due to  covid meant to a deterioration from treatable to palative.

  • Hello Olstan,

I am sorry to learn about your diagnosis.

I'm afraid I don't know if waiting for treatment will have any impact on your treatment options or long term outlook - it might not and I will try and explain why.

Prostate cancer sometimes grows and spreads relatively slowly.  So even though it is a few months since the cancer was first diagnosed it is quite possible that it might still be treatable.  Although as a general rule it is good to start cancer treatment sooner rather than later, there still is a chance it may not have got significantly worse.

As part of being assessed for treatment it is quite common that someone with prostate cancer will have various scans, just because you are having these doesn't necessarily mean that the doctors think that it is worse than they might have done initially, it is routine.

When they have the results of all the tests they will be able to talk the situation through with you and give you an idea of what your treatment options are and what you can expect from them.

Please call us if you want to talk anything over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday (not Bank Holidays) .

    Best wishes,

    Julia

  • Hi Olstan how is it going for you now? Thanks

  • Hello John and thank you for posting.

We are sending you a response as it has been a year since Olstan posted. So you may not get a reply from this person.

Do remember that everyone's situation is different even if it sounds similar. If you have any symptoms that concern you please do talk to your GP. Or if you have a prostate cancer diagnosis do talk to someone in your hospital team.

For general prostate cancer information do have a look at our website here or Prostate Cancer UK's website here.

Take care John and if you want to give us a call then you might want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and lines open 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
