Indeterminate MRI scan

I was diagnosed with TNBC a few weeks ago and have had so many scans over the last few weeks. I had a CT scan, PET scan and an MRI on my spine & liver, the latter was yesterday. I have just had the results back and whatever was showing on my liver is benign but the spine scan is still indeterminate. There is one spot on T12 vertebrae that they are unsure about. All of my bloods are clear. Surely one of the scans are able to pick up what it could be? My treatment plan is in place I'm just waiting to hear when it will start. They said the chemo would work right through my body. They are going to do another MRI after my treatment finishes to see if there are any changes. I'm just anxious and very disappointed that they can't tell me what it is, if anything? Is it normal for this to happen.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and appreciate not knowing the complete picture must be a concern for you.

Unfortunately there are times when findings aren't clear cut and the doctors cannot definitely say what a 'spot' on a scan may be.

The important thing is you are having chemotherapy and as your team has said this is systemic treatment that works throughout the body so if this spot were to be cancer it should tackle this as well as the cancer in the breast.

Try not to dwell on this too much, it isn't unusual for spots, shadows or lesions to be found in the body and for doctors to be unsure about the exact cause. As they have said they will repeat the scan to check what is going on but this spot may be nothing to do with the cancer and harmless.

I hope this helps a little, do get back if you need to or you can also call us on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer. We're here Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Wishing you all the best

    Naomi
