Ultrasound report

Hi there, I had a scan today to check my coil was in the right place as I passed a weird mass a few months ago. Anyway the coil was fine, but the technician took ages scanning (internally) and then did an abdominal scan too. She was super serious and gloomy, said I have a cyst and would need to come back and when I asked her any questions and if everything else was ok she said my gp would need to talk to me. Fast forward literally 2.5 hours later and I rang my gp surgery to ask how I go about getting a copy of the report (naively thinking it would take a few days for the dr to review ans I have a family member who is a gynae so he can as happy to look at the results for me) and my report has already been reviewed by my GP and the receptionist said he wants to speak to me tomorrow? I am quite frankly terrified? Is it normal for an NHS Gp to review the report so quickly or would it have to be flagged up for him to do that?

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

While I realise that it might be disconcerting that your GP received your results quickly it still does not mean you necessarily have cancer. In fact the person that scanned you seemed very efficient, which might explain her serious face.

Your GP will be able tell you what your report says and if there is a concern that you could have cancer. If this is the case or if there is another concern not related to cancer you will be referred to see a gynaecologist and might need to have further tests.

I think it is important to remember that not everyone who needs to be referred will find out they have cancer, most will not.

I hope your GP appointment goes well.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
