Colposcopy biopsy result nerves

Hi everyone,

I've recently been for a colposcopy after have a 'boarder line' changes abnormal smear. I wasn't nervous until I had a punch biopsy taken in 3 different places. The doctor did try to explain the next step and said I will have to wait 4 weeks for the results but tbh I didn't listen to my full ability after he said precancerous. I'm now overly worried and struggling to sleep, I am only 27 without children and now worried about my future fetilerty and my over all health. Is taken multiple biopsy normal? Can anyone shade light on what to expect next whilst I wait or where I can look for advice

Thanks again :)

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Please try not to worry too much. The biopsies are taken to see how abnormal the cells are.  For the majority of women in this situation they will find out that the cells have a degree of abnormality. This is known and referred to as CIN 1, CIN 2 or CIN 3. CIN stands for Cervical Intra-epithelial Neoplasia.  The number 1, 2 and 3 relates to level of abnormality, 1 - low grade, 2 - intermediate and 3 - high grade. While these cells could become a cancer (if not treated) , it would usually take many years for this to happen.

Some women do need to have more than one biopsy taken, so please don't worry as it is not unusual for this to be done.

Having treatment (removal of abnormal cells on the cervix) and biopsies does not usually cause problems giving birth. Having abnormal cervical cells does not affect fertility (the ability to get pregnant).  If having treatment might affect the ability to carry a child to full term you will be told about this. If this does happen there is a procedure that can be used to help a woman deliver a baby close to full term.  We have information about this on our webste here

You will be told about your biopsy results at a time close to when they are ready.  You might need to have treatment, if you have not already had it. Until then it might help to know that this is happening to many women up and down the country every day. It is unlikely that you will have cancer.

I hope you can busy yourself enough to take your mind off this and have support from family and friends.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
