Throat Pain after Radiotherapy

Hi,

Had 20 sessions of Radiotherapy for lung cancer. Finished 14 days ago. Problems with eating , swallowing started  after 10 days. Throat pain on right hand side got a lot worse last few days along with ear pain. Is this normal as I thought after 2 weeks pain would get better not worse? Thanks in advance ️

  • Hello Nindy and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you needed to have radiotherapy for lung cancer.

The side effects of radiotherapy take a few weeks to get better and go after treatment has finished. I am afraid that it is not possible for me here and not being involved in your care to say if this is something to be concerned about. Therefore, I think the best thing for you to do is to get in touch with your lung cancer nurse specialist and let him/her know, just to be on the safe side. If you cannot contact the nurse then the radiotherapy department (where you were treated) nurses might be of some help or your GP.

In the meantime it might help to take some mild over the counter pain relief, you might need to check this with your lung cancer nurse, your GP or shop pharmacist.  Also, try sucking on some ice lollies and try drinking cold fizzy drinks as it might help or warm milky drinks might help ease any discomfort you have.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
