Post Colonoscopy and Polyp Removal Pain

Hello. Yesterday, I underwent a colonoscopy with gas and air which I still found uncomfortable. After the procedure was over I felt fine for about 3 hours then I developed chills, followed by a fever and right side abdominal pain.. I took paracetomol and went to bed for a couple of hours. The pain didn't subside and I had a very uncomfortable night with sweating and right side abdominal pain. The pain is still quite bad today, though the fever seems to have gone. Should I be worried or is this pain normal? I had one polyp removed piece-meal and one removed by cold snare, as well as a series of biopsies taken. Thanks in advance for any comments / info. George

  • Hello George and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry about the pain you've been experiencing since you had your colonoscopy, although I'm glad to hear your fever has abated.

Our cancer nurses work between 9a.m - 5p.m so they won't see your post until tomorrow, but if you're worried or the pain gets worse this evening, you can get medical advice from the NHS on 111.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello George and thank you for your post.

I think after a colonoscopy that involved taking polyps and biopsies it would be expected to have some pain. However, it is difficult for me to know if there is a concern that you still have pain.  The best thing to do if you are still worried is to contact the colonoscopy unit and explain you had one recently and you have pain.  You could also get a GP appointment to discuss it.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thanks for your reply, Caroline. I think the pain may be easing off a bit today, so I'll see how things go over the next couple of days. Best wishes, George.
