Stage 4 metastatic bladder cancer. with liver problems. Help

I'm posting on behalf of my brother who has stage 4 metastatic bladder cancer  now affecting his liver. Latest Blood tests were bad, so oncologist said no more chemo. He has had cisplatin and atezolizumab. I just feel I can't sit back and let him die! I want to help him. He is a fighter. Could he use cannabinoids like sativex? Or what? I am desperate, and I know he and his wife are too. Please any ideas? Thank you

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am so sorry to hear about your brother and appreciate this must be such a difficult time for you all.

Finding out there is nothing more that can be done is tough so I can understand you seeking all avenues and to ask if anyone can make a suggestion of something that may help.

Unfortunately no one here can recommend treatment as we are not involved in your brother's care. However it is worth talking it through with your brothers doctors again to see if there are any other options out there and also to ask their thoughts on cannabinoids.

In regards to cannabinoids there are a few types but in the UK these are only licensed and available to buy as food supplements. There are some medical cannabis based products that can be prescribed for specific use. Sativex is licensed for multiple sclerosis and muscle spasticity and Nabilone to treat nausea and vomiting for people receiving chemotherapy where other anti sickness medications aren't working.

You can read more about cannabis and different products here.

There is more research going into this area but at the moment there is not enough sufficient evidence to suggest cannabis or it's compounds can effectively treat cancer or are safe enough to use.

I know this may be disappointing to hear and I know if I were in the same situation to you I would also want my loved one to try anything to give more time. But decisions like these need to also be weighed up to make sure your brother has the best quality of life and is kept as comfortable for as long as possible.

Please get back if you have more questions or you might prefer to give us a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday-Friday 9-5.

Wishing you all the very best

    Naomi
