Anomalous check up scan post melanoma

Hi there

My husband had a stage 1a melanoma removed from tip of his ear last summer. They removed a second layer of tissue that was all clear, and did a sentinel node removal which was all clear.

He's just had his first check up ultrasound a couple of weeks ago. The technician said it looked OK to her and she couldn't see anything nasty but that it would be reviewed as normal.

Yesterday he received a dreadfully worded online message saying that following his scan and subsequent review, they had found some slight anomalies and he's been recalled for a CT/PET scan. We both panicked. He rang the cancer team and one of the nurses was quite reassuring. It turns out that the anomaly found was that his lymph nodes on both sides of his neck were all slightly enlarged. She said the most common reason for this is when one is fighting off a virus. He did have a cold at the time because he remembers reassuring the technician that he had had a negative covid result that morning.

She said that they are taking a belt and braces approach here rather than are particularly worried but I'm going out of my mind with worry now. Possibly because of the shock of that awful online message. Despite her explanations and reassurances the initial shock hasn't worn off. She did say that he wasn't supposed to get that before a phone call but someone pushed the button too early.

Has anyone encountered this please?

Many thanks and love to you all.

  • Hello EmmaRebecca and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern about your husband's ultrasound scan results but, as the nurse involved in your husband's care has said, the slightly enlarged lymph nodes are not necessarily caused by a progression of the cancer.  This is particularly the case because he was diagnosed initially with a very early stage melanoma (stage 1a) which usually have a very good outlook.

I am afraid it is now all about waiting for CT/PET scan to be done and then the results. As you know only too well that waiting can be difficult.  There is no way around this so I hope you can be a support to each other and have people around you that can support you both.

I am not sure if anyone else will see your post and respond. This is because you are in the Ask the Nurses area, if you post elsewhere on the site you might get more responses.

You would also be welcome to get back to us if you need any more information or support and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you so much for replying. You're right, it's now the wait for the scan and results.

I made a mistake in my first message. His melanoma was 1.1mm thick and not ulcerated which just places it into the 1b stage.

    Many thanks, Emma
