PET scan following a breast cancer diagnosis

Hi

I had a CT scan on Tues and then went to see my Oncologist yesterday about treatment for my breast cancer. He said the results of the scan hadn't been discussed in the weekly meeting but he would have a look at them while I was there. He said the lungs looked clear but the was a spot on the liver and bone. What does that mean? He is now sending me for a PET scan and I'm absolutely terrified that it's spread. I'm waiting for an appointment. I don't know how to deal with it I'm so scared. Is there treatment?

  • Hi there

I'm sorry to hear about your situation and appreciate not knowing the full extent of what is going on must be very scary for you.

Try not to take things one step at a time and don't let your mind run away with itself until you have all the answers.

There could be several causes for these spots on your liver and bone and it is only further tests that will be able to tell what these are.

If this does turn out to be cancer spread then these will be called secondary cancer/s. Sadly secondary cancers in most cases can't be cured however treatment is given to control the cancer and this can often be for many years.

Do remember every patient is different so searching for answers on the internet or from other people isn't always that helpful. Wait and see what the doctors come back with once the PET scan results are in and a discussion has happened at the weekly MDT ( Multi Disciplinary Team) and what the plan is moving forward.

I do hope everything works out okay for you but do get back if you have more questions. Feel free to give the nurses a buzz on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer, we're here Monday-Friday 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
