3 month wait for another smear test. Can this be quicker?

I had a smear last year that showed HPV. I had another done about 3 weeks ago. I got a phone call from my surgery today telling me the test failed because the nurse used the wrong label and the lab couldn't complete the test. I have been told I need to return after 3 months as they won't do another smear before then. I was already stressed waiting for the results and now I am concerned about waiting another 3 months. What if there is something wrong. What should I do? Is there any other way I can see if I am ok? Can I go somewhere else?

    I'm sorry you are concerned about your recent cervical screening result. Please try not to worry, the cervical screening programme is all about preventing cancer by detecting abnormalities that can then be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal.

    It's the guidelines to wait for 3 months for a repeat smear test as this allows the lining of the cervix to regenerate so there are enough cells to do the repeat test. Doing this any earlier may result in an inadequate test.

    Cervical screening is very successful so as long as you attend your appointments when invited and follow the advice you are given then everything should be okay. So please try not to overly worry about this.
