Chemotherapy during covid

Hi I'm getting chemo for BC paclitaxel and Herceptin/ Perjeta . I've just had covid and I'm not convinced I'm totally over it but my chemo is going ahead as I've missed a few weeks for different reasons. Has anyone else had experience of getting chemo just after or during covid and how did it feel? A bit scared but at the same time I know I need to get cracking with the chemo. Had 5 days of psxlovid antivirals And felt much better but have felt worse since it stopped - mainly very sore throat .

  • Aye, my wife got docetaxel a week after testing negative. Like yourself, she had missed a week here and there for various reasons. Mostly because it was hammering her, and she kept getting something or another like covid, shingles and temps (unrelated to covid). She was fine getting chemo insofar it didn't knock her any more than it would have in the absence of covid.

  • Thisnks so much for taking the time to share this.hope your wife is ok and chemotherapy is going as well as possible

  • She finished it a few weeks ago. She's 2 weeks out from her op.

Weirdly, she found covid to be a welcome break. She said it felt a lot better than the chemo did. We were all kinda lucky. I had a dry right nostril for a day, and had my wife not been rushed to hospital with a blazing temp and subsequently tested positive, I would never have even thought to test myself. I assumed it was the heating blaring that had dried my nose. She was a wee bit breathless for the first day (we didn't even think covid), then she woke up with a raging temp. The next day she felt normalish. She got the antibodies via iv.

Covid is really strange, huh? Someone like me wouldn't even have realised i had had it, whilst others get floored with it. Like i said, even the wife was fine barring the high temp for a day.

Just listen to your nurses and doctor and you will be fine. I think there's a lot of data around now telling them it's safe to administer chemo in recently recovered people.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. How frustrating that you are now recovering from Covid in the midst of your treatment.

As we now have the antiviral medications available to treat vulnerable patients it does make treating patients having chemotherapy much more possible. Doctors have got to weigh up the safety versus giving chemotherapy without too many delays. It is good that you are also hearing from other members of the forum about their experiences.

Do make sure that you have the chemotherapy helpline number to hand and if you feel unwell or have a temperature, don't hesitate to get in touch with them.

Try to rest as much as possible whilst you are still recovering after your next chemotherapy drinking at least two litres of fluid to flush the chemotherapy through.

I do hope that it all goes well for you.

You are more then welcome to ring one of the helpline nurses if you want to go through this or anything else.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
