Hpv positive but no abnormal cells

Hi everyone,

Sorry I suffer from health anxiety so this has tipped me over the edge, doesn't take much. But I got my smear test results yesterday and I have been awake all night worried sick. I have no abnormal cells which is good but I have HPV, I haven't had sex for about 3 years. So I'm shocked and upset by this. I know they have only just started testing for HPV but I think people are surprised and confused with what this means. I thought I wouldn't have it as its been so long since I last had a boyfriend. Its made me very anxious so I'm going to my doctors this week to speak to them. I was doing so well with my health anxiety then this happens. I know I'm not alone and others are probably getting similar results.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I'm sorry you are concerned about your recent cervical screening result. Please try not to worry, the cervical screening programme is all about preventing cancer by detecting abnormalities that can then be monitored or treated until everything returns to normal.

HPV is a common infection and it is estimated that most people ( 80%) who are sexually active will get HPV at some stage in their lives.

When the screening test is HPV positive, the cells are looked at to see if there are any abnormal cells. If there is any cell change then you would be referred to a colposcopy clinic for a closer examination of the cervix. As you are HPV positive with no cell changes, then you will have your next smear in a years’ time rather than the usual 3 years. You can read more about HPV on the Jo's Trust website by clicking here.

Unfortunately we do not know of a way of helping our body remove the HPV any quicker than just allowing our immune system to kick in, but we do know that smoking does make it harder for the body to get rid of it. So if you smoke it would be a good idea to give up.

Most people will have no symptoms and their immune system will clear HPV up in a year or two without them ever knowing they had it. It is not possible to tell when a person got HPV or how long they have had it.

Cervical screening is very successful so as long as you attend your appointments when invited and follow the advice given to you at the clinic then everything should be okay. So please try not to overly worry about this.

I hope this has been helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
