Has anyone had LLetz awake during their colposcopy?
I'd like to know what to expect and I don't really want to return again just to have it done with a general anaesthetic.
Thanks

Hi Tazm1
I had this done a few years back and though not the most pleasant experience it was manageable. The area was numbed with an injection, probably the worst part and then you don't really feel anything. The nurses kept me talking and distracted and it was over fairly soon so I could go straight home. I've had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy since with sedation so would consider myself on the cautious side with pain so it is bearable.
I hope this helps
Lou
Thanks I've had lots of surgeries and gastroscopies/colonoscopies. Sedation has no effect on me so it's either wide awake or GA for things and I wasn't sure what the pain level would be. Thanks.

Hi, new to your forum. I had a LLETZ procedure at the end of March 2022. I was concerned about two things. Any pain when the local anaesthetic was injected and memories of severe discomfort when the nurse had previously inserted a speculum. Well the whole thing was a totally pleasant experience. When i mentioned the problem with the speculum, the consultant gave me a tube of instilagel, a watery local anaesthetic which i self applied in the bathroom and then sat in the waiting room for 15 minutes. Then i went through to the treatment room, removed my lower garments and sat on the end of the couch. I lay back and placed my legs in the stirrup things which was only slightly raised and comfortable. I have lower back pain but this was no problem. I didn't even realise the speculum was in. The consultant said because of having my legs raised, the position was much better and more comfortable and im sure the instilagel helped too. I was offerred the option to view all on a screen next to me, never been that up close and personal with my bits before. The injections for anaesthetic were literally tiny prickles. It worked quickly and i felt nothing when the biopsies were taken. Please dont be scared ladies. Just chat to your consultant and tell them of your worries. Good Luck everybody.
