Boney lump on sternum

Hiya,

About 4 months ago I noticed a pea sized hard immovable lump on my sternum. It's not my xyphoid process and it feels like it's slowly growing. But with no pain. I'm trying to make an appointment with my GP but everything is digital now, they asked for a picture and told me it's my xyphoid process (argh !it's not I know what this is!). I'm a 44 year old male. Anybody had a similar experience ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

It is generally not that useful to compare stories about a symptom on a forum to be honest, as everyone's situation is different. It is most likely that it is a normal bone anatomy, and you have just become more aware of it recently. Sometimes inflammation from a physical activity can make it more noticeable. You could try some anti-inflammatory drugs such as Brufen to see if it helps.

If you are worrying about it, then do ask your GP about it again. They may order an x-ray, to reassure you.

    I hope this helps,

    Best wishes,

    Vanda

  • Hi Nurse Vanda,

    Thanks for your reply,

I've checked the confusion with the xyphoid process and it's definitely not that. I'm sure it wasn't there before and am pretty sure it has grown over the last couple of months. It's too hard and painless to be a swelling too. It really feels like bone. I will try to nag m you GP into accepting me for an appointment but it's getting kind of difficult these days to get one.
