Waiting for biopsy result

Hi

I had a colonoscopy on Saturday 23 April and a lump was discovered in the rectum. It is 3cm wide and at least 2 deep. Biopsies were taken and the consultant said that looking at the picture it looks like a lipoma.

I was told the biopsy results would take 1-2 weeks and I also have an MRI scan booked to check in more detail.

I can't get hold of the consultant and have left 2 messages on the secretaries answerphone to check if the biopsy results are back. I am now becoming very anxious as I feel if they had come back Ok as expected I would have heard by now.

It would be good to hear your experiences and if this wait time is normal.

Thanks so much

  • Hi Liz

Following a colonoscopy I waited around 15 days for an urgent MRI, so unfortunately waiting times are not as quick as we would hope. So try not to worry too much. Once my scan and biopsy results were back I was seen quickly and my treatment started. Have the hospital given you some support telephone numbers, for a chemo nurse for example? They may be able to offer additional support and advice.

    Best of luck

  • Thank you

I have managed to get in touch with the secretary today. She has said that all biopsies including urgent ones are in a backlog of up to 6 weeks. So think it is just a waiting game !

I am hoping that it will confirm it's benign but it feels like a long wait to know

Hope your treatment is going well x

  • Hello and thanks for posting,

I can appreciate that it is difficult waiting for results. It can easily take several weeks regardless of the actual results, and that can be due to a general backlog, and a shortage of specialists that do the report for the doctors. So, keep busy and occupied if you can, for now.

You should hear within the next week or so,

    Wishing the best,

    Vanda

  • Thank you

I do feel a bit better now I know the timescale I was making my own scenarios up before for the delay !

Its definitely good advice to keep occupied I am much better when I am in meetings etc as I need to focus.

    Thank you for replying
