Gastroscopy

I went for an Endoscope last week. ( these are the results )

quote: the gastric mucosa appeared generally erythematus and Bulky.

in the middle body of the stomach there were multiple large inflammatory looking pedunculated polyps crowded together, largest easily  21mm, I was unable to see the underlying mucosa in this area.

The latgest polyp was difficult to accuratley identify ( many were large and of similar size ), I have not taken indivdual biopsies because of this but taken multiple of the crowd ro r/o dysplasia.

Random gastric biopsies also taken.

My question is what does that mean in laymans terms, and what action will be taken ?.

  • Hello Puzzlex and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but I'm afraid I can't explain what your gastroscopy report means or tell you what the outcome is likely to be. This is something that you need to ask someone from the gastroenterology team (digestive diseases specialists) or your GP, but even they may need to have the biopsy results to give you the full picture.

You probably know that most stomach (gastric) polyps are harmless growths. Biopsies are often taken to look for something called dysplasia (abnormal cells that might go onto develop into cancer later) and this is mentioned in the report - r/o (rule out) dysplasia. I think they usually biopsy the largest polyp if several are found, but because you have a quite a few of a similar size, they took samples from several as well as some random biopsies from other sites of the stomach lining. I think this sounds routine.

That is about as much as I can tell you I'm afraid. I hope your doctors can tell you more soon.

    Take care,

    Julia
