Help please

Hi, wondering if anybody can help please! Here's the issue my wife has had a double mastectomy, after this she has had a double ld flap surgery on both sides meaning both of her lats are now removed and used to make new breasts

At the time this seemed fine but now a few years on my wife struggles so bad with having no proper core now. Physically it's horrific and we have yet to meet anybody who's had the same procedure on both sides.

The physio hasn't met anybody either so she feels like nobody can understand how she feels. It would be nice if anybody has had this procedure so my wife could talk to you or get coping methods etc. Don't know if this will even get an answer but thought it be worth a go. Thank you and take care

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your wife's situation and the obvious discomfort that it must be causing her.

I wonder whether her physio is able to seek the advice from other members of her practice or is she in contact with a breast surgeon who has some expertise in reconstructive surgery. I wonder whether the physio felt it would help to do some gentle exercises such as yoga or Pilates.

I am not sure whether your wife has talked this through with her GP and whether they could re refer her back to the surgeon who did the original operation for advice.

You have posted in 'ask the nurses' I wonder whether if you post on a different thread you may get more responses from other women.

Breast Cancer Now have a service called 'Someone Like Me' where they try and put women together who are in a similar situation. Have a look at their details here

They also have a forum where you can post here

You can also talk to their nurses on the helpline on 0808 800 6000.

I do hope that some of these links may be helpful and that it will lead to some positive solutions to make your wife more comfortable.

You are also welcome to speak to one of our nurses on our helpline. Our number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best Wishes to you both,

    Catherine

  • Hi thank you for taking the time to reply to my message. It's nice to know there are these groups to help. It's a strange position for Nicola my wife to be in and I'm sure she will find someone who has had the same or similar surgeries.

Nicolas still under her surgeon and still under her physio (breast specialist). She does really well considering but it's difficult as you can imagine. Pilates we have tried but it isn't really working. I appreciate your help and information, hopefully we will find something or someone that can help. I have managed to get her under a psychologist and has had her 1st telephone appointment this week.

    Thank you

    Take care

    Anthony
