My stepdad had brain surgery and theres no help

On monday my stepdad had a seizure, he had never had one before. They did a scan and saw a shadow on his brain, he was then diagnosed with stage 2 cancerous tumour in his brain. Friday they did brain surgery on him, sent him home the next day with medication and now hes just been left alone with no therapy. He struggles with getting his words out and he has no grip in his right hand. We are all very stressed and he had another seizure yesterday,  they did another scan and theres fluid and blood in the hole where they got the brain tumour out.

Is there any support, equipment or therapy that we can get him?

  • Hello Lostfifi and thanks for posting,

I'm sorry to learn about your stepdad and can understand this must be a stressful time for everyone in the family.

Before discharge, hospitals usually assess someone to see if they can manage at home and then arrange community based support services when needed. So I think it might be a good idea to contact the hospital ward to see if they have already made any referrals.

I think it would be worth finding out what the neurosurgeons think about the issues you mentioned - your stepdad's grip and word finding ability and anything else that comes to mind. They may expect these to gradually improve, if so, ask how long this might take and if they would recommend any specific therapy as well as time passing.

Sometimes input from NHS physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists can be helpful after brain surgery, but how much they get involved probably varies depending on the situation. So I think you probably need to be guided by the specialist hospital team. Our website explains who can help people to recovery from brain tumour treatment at this link.

You could take a look at the website of another charity, Brain Tumour UK, amongst other information, they have some tips about managing word finding problems at this link and information about seizures here.

I wondered if your stepdad was re-admitted into hospital after the seizure he had on Sunday, or if after his latest scan, he was sent home again.  If he is in hospital, talk to the ward staff about what he will need and can access when he comes home. If he is at home talk to the GP, but first check to see if the ward has put anything in place.

I hope your stepdad makes a good recovery and that things improve for him soon.

Please get in touch if you would like to talk anything through. Our number is  Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around from 9-5, weekdays.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
