Urgent blood test after chest wall ultrasound

Hi I'm 33 usually at I've really healthy, This started with a bony lump right in the middle of my chest with quite severe pain in February which made me go to the GP it honestly feels like a fractured when it's sore and seems to be aggregated when lifting my daughter, I had the urgent ultrasound on Thursday which the ultrasound tech said was a bony protrusion and that it's fine not a mass and to speak to my Gp with my results in five days, the next morning I had a call from my GP Before the doctors surgery opened saying I'm being put on the cancer pathway bone and soft tissue and that I need urgent blood tests.

im just now worried sick that the ultrasound tech has sent this over to my GP urgently and they've played it down to me.

I don't understand why I would need urgent blood tests and now a cancer referral.

Is anyone in a similar position and it turned out ok?

thank you

thsi has seriously worried me

  • Hi there MissN! It's wonderful to have you here, I'm sure more people will come along and say hi!

I'm currently going through checks on a lump on my rib cage which feels although it could be a bony protrusion! However, I am genuinely concerned of it being cancer, as it did appear out of no where, On may the 4th (No pun intended lol) I'm going to see the Doctor for what I can only hope will be either an MRI or CT referral! It might just be another test they want to run just to be sure about your whole situation, bone and soft tissue cancers are some of the rarest cancers, so I imagine they would want to check as much as they can!

  • Aw I hope everything turns out well for us both, I just don't understand how the ultrasound tech said it's literally just a bony profusion not a mass and said to discuss in five days with your GP to then me getting a phone call the next morning from my GP saying I'm on the cancer pathway and I need urgent blood tests just doesn't make sense.

  • I hope it does too! Please keep us updated on how you are doing! The cancer pathway is often used to fast track things, as it's a much shorter wait, especially during covid times, maybe your GP is just trying to do all the tests as fast as he can? Either way, lets cross our fingers, it's a great sign that the ultrasound didn't show anything though!

  • Hello MissN123 and thanks for posting,

I can understand you asking, but I think only your GP can explain why they decided to arrange urgent blood tests and a suspected cancer referral. If you can, try and get in touch with them to find out what their thinking is.

In general, most people referred urgently like this turn out to have something else the matter, but they need to be seen urgently to rule cancer out in case this is what is going on.

Waiting is usually a horrible time and most people inevitably feel anxious. Do what works for you to try and cope with the wait in the days ahead.  I hope you find out more soon.

    Take care,

    Julia

  • I've already asked to double check but he basically said it's them being overly cautious, I just don't know what to think I also asked would it be quicker to just be referred for an urgent CT scan and he said they I'm presuming the doctors had a meeting to discuss and they said it's a lot quicker to be put on the cancer pathway for tests etc.

The good news is today my blood results are back and inflammatory markers are Normal but the receptionist did say I do need the urgent appointment still.

Fingers crossed this is just a scare xx

  • Hi,

I know it's a while since you posted but I was wondering what your outcome was? (Really hope all was ok) I have an ultrasound for a very similar sounding bony lump on my sternum/rib and I'm a nervous wreck!

    Thank you xx

  • Aw I hope you're ok the worry of it all is absolutely awful,  It ended up being a really good outcome my blood test came back fine I then had a telephone appointment with a sarcoma and soft tissue cancer consultant who had meeting and reviewed my x ray of the lump as well as a chest x ray id had two years earlier to all of this for the the pain  problem in the same area, he said everything looked normal no lesions nothing concerning whatsoever he couldn't tell me what it actually is I questioned him about everything I have lymphoma in the family I mentioned that all sorts and he was still adamant it's nothing and I questioned can cancer be seen on an ultrasound how can you be so sure he said anything cancerous can definitely be picked up on ultrasound I think he was relieved to get me off the phone in the end, I still have it now but I haven't got the pain.

I hope everything goes ok for you xx

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to reply (sorry to bring up an old topic) but I've searched the internet (worse thing to do) and convinced myself it's awful news! So glad yours turned out to be all ok!
I have my ultrasound Tuesday. My bony lump is similar position although hasn't caused me pain I just noticed it one day! Anyway thank you xx
