Sore Throat for well over two years

Sore Throat for well over two years

Hello -  I hope someone can help me please...I'm worried sick at the moment.

During the Xmas period of 2020, I woke up with a terribe sore throat. I had a telephone consultation with a GP who prescribe two weeks of antibiotics. The sore throat pain went away, the redness was still there - but no pain

I went back to the GP Sept 2021 after suffering varios bouts of sore throats ( I could only get a telephone appoitment with a nurse) she did a throat swob and blood tests. Both came back normal.

Again the sore thoat went away (still redness persisted), so  I saw my GP in December 2021 who looked in my throat and said she couldn't see anything wrong but gave me some anti-acids as she thought it might be silent reflux. But they had no effect at all. After taking the course the sore throat went away, although the back of my throat still looked red and the Uvula had red speckles on it.

Last week I had a telephone consultation with my GP who prescribed another course of antibiotics. I have just finished them, sadly the soreness is still there and the redness around my Uvula is still there. I decided I had had enough and telephone my GP and asked to see an ENT. I have decided to pay for it myself and I have an appointment this Friday at noon.

I stupidly Googled my symptoms and now I'm firghtened  out of my mind with worry. If I get a cancer diagnosis, I know I will blame myself for not insisting I saw an ENT sooner.

Is anyone out there in a similar position?

I have a very important interview tomorrow and I can't get my thoughts together - I'm just a puddle of mess and my husband is currently away on business.

Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I don't think you need to blame yourself for anything. Your GP would have referred you to the ENT doctor if they thought it was necessary but you have decided to do it yourself with a private referral because you are still concerned.

Googling symptoms will nearly always see cancer pop up but please remember that doing this cannot diagnose you. I know you are worried but please do not assume you have cancer. Remember the same symptoms as cancer can occur for other reasons

Health scares are common and inevitably trigger a lot of worry, but a lot of the time nothing serious turns out to be the matter so try and hold your nerve and keep an open mind. I hope your appointment goes well and that you will be okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
