Going mad with pain and irriration

In 2020 I had my nose removed due to nasal cancer and since then I have been plagued with pain and irritation inside the nose hole. It is constant, all day and night it's affecting my every day life and stopping me from sleeping. I am taking paracetamol, Tramadol (which I do take for a back condition) Panadol and I gave some liquid morphine.  None of these takes the pain away no matter how many doses I take. I can't go on much longer with this, no taste or smell is bad enough. But this is horrendous. Please help somebody.

  • hello yorkiegirl,

how horrible for you and finding no respite is awful. l think you should make contact with the consultant that operated on you, telephone their secretary and take it from there,l wonder if there is an ongoing infection of the tissue, whatever l feel sure they will welcome the feedback and move to try and resolve the issue.Good luck and let us know how you get on,

  • Hi Gruntifen, thanks for your reply. I'm at the plastics clinic now but my Consultant hasn't a clinic today.  I will get one of the Plastic Nurses to get in touch with him as I had no sleep again last night.  I will let you know how I go on.

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you have had surgery for nasal cancer and that you now have pain and irritation and nothing seems to help. This must be distressing for you. I see that you are due to be seen in the plastics clinic today so I hope this can be assessed for you.

You say that are going to talk with your specialist nurse who will get in touch with your consultant on your behalf. Hopefully this will help your situation. If there are signs of infection you will have treatment which will reduce or stop your symptoms. I also wonder if an antihistamine tablet would help with the irritation you are getting, do ask.

If this is not caused by infection then I wonder if a referral to a specialist pain team would be helpful. The pain team are experts in pain control and often will see the more complicated cases.

I hope you will be okay. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
