Cancerous cyst

I've been told a have a cancerous cyst in my armpit. What does that mean? How is that different to a tumour? Does that mean I have cancer somewhere and it has spread to my armpit? Or, is this likely to be the start of something and we've caught it early?

I found out on Thursday (it's Sunday today) and I'm losing my mind

Awaiting appointments for CT and MRI.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you have a cancerous cyst and appreciate this must be a worrying time for you and you must have lots of questions.

Unfortunately i'm afraid no one here can tell you much more than you already know. It will be these further scans that are being arranged that will be able to tell you the bigger picture about what is going on and what needs to happen next.

So far it seems that some cancer cells have been found in a cyst in your armpit. I assume you had an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy as well that has given this result. Often a biopsy will reveal the type of cancer cells they are and where they originated from. Sometimes more tests are needed to confirm this and also to be able to stage the cancer ( size and extent) and guide what treatment is needed.

Hopefully you will know more soon, but do ask the doctors involved in your care any other questions you have in the meantime. Your GP may also have access to the hospital results that may give some more clues as to what type of cancer this may be.

Try and take things one step at a time. I hope you have family and friends around you to support you at this time and also make sure you are looking after yourself as well.

Do get back if you wish to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040 to speak with one of the nurses. We are here Monday-Friday 9-5.

All the very best to you now

    Take care

    Naomi
