Confused

I recieved my diagnosis yesterday. Stomach cancer, uncurable!! Ouch. I had the procedure with the camera down the throat and she said she could see a stomach ulcer. Pet scan done doctor is saying this is actually the cancer. I'm so confused. Could she be wrong could he be wrong, should i get a second opinion?? I have no symptoms at all, I feel absolutely fine in myself, im female and only 33. Waiting to find out what course or medication I will have but surely that will make me ill. Anyone else had a confusing time?

  • Hello Lacey216 and thanks for your post.

I am sorry to hear what you are going through and I can appreciate the worry you have.

Without being involved in your care it is difficult to know for sure what is going on. If biopsies have been taken, these can be done during the endoscopy (the procedure of the camera going down your throat), then these will give more information about what is the matter. So I wonder if you have had these results?

When someone is diagnosed with cancer their case is discussed at a multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting. This is when a group of cancer specialists look at all the information about a persons medical case (biopsy results and scan results)  and discusses diagnosis and treatment.  This may have been done or it will be done soon. Knowing what the outcome of this may help you feel less confused about what is happening.

Sometimes people do want a second opinion, so if this is something you want to do you can ask your current hospital doctor or GP about organising one for you. However, having one will not necessarily change what is happening for you. We have information about this on our website, you can see it here

Unfortunately a cancer can be found when it is not expected and this can make it more difficult to accept. I hope you have support at what must be a difficult time for you and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
