How long is the wait from diagnosis to treatment?

My Mum was diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary on the 1st of April in breast, lungs, liver and back. They done a biopsy to determine, where it started and to plan better treatment. We know its not treatable but manageable. They now got the biopsy results and know that it started in the breast, she's now being referred to an oncologist team who will set up treatment for and will talk us through. Yet, the doctors cannot give me a timeline to when this will happen.

My concern is my mum is now completey bed bound, they've been doing physio but she's unable to walk and get up on her own. She's currently on morphine but she progessed to the worse pretty quick and at the moment I've been told she will be in the hospital until they have a care plan in place but yet we are unsure on what's going to actually happen or what is actually happening.

Anyone got similar experience and know what to expect?

  • Hello Savy_93 and thanks for posting,

I am very sorry to learn about your mum and how poorly she seems to have become. It must be very upsetting for you to see her this way.

Treatment for cancer tends to be decided on by a MDT(multidisciplinary team). This is made up of doctors from different disciplines and other health professionals including oncologists (who specialise in the medical treatment of cancer and radiotherapy). MDTs usually meet once a week to review cases and decide what is best for each individual patient. So it could be that your mum's case has yet to be reviewed by the MDT, but do ask about it and find out when the MDT meets up.

I am not sure why your mum has become completely bed bound. Sometimes this can be due to profound weakness, and to begin with morphine might make some people drowsy, but if there is cancer in the backbone, sometimes the cancer can press on the spine and nerves to cause weakness in the limbs. I think you should ask the hospital doctors why your mum is unable to walk and get up on her own and if this might be due to the cancer in her back. I am assuming they don't think it is because when they do, they would usually get the oncology team involved quickly, but there is no harm in asking and I think it is fair enough to want to know what is happening. Do talk to the hospital doctors and ask them to explain what their thinking is about your mum.

I am not sure if anyone else will come along and post, if they do, because everyone's situation can be different, it might not shed much light on what is going on with your mum.

I hope you can find out more about your mum's care soon. Do call us if you want to talk anything over, our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays, 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
