Melanoma and Diabetes Diet

Hi  my dad has been diagnosed with melanoma of the lung and now brain.  He has been on Trametinib and Dabrafenib for 3 days.  i am concerned that the meds are making him flucuate between type 1 & 2.  what foods are best to eat and what to stay away from.

Thank You

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation and appreciate you have some questions.

As you may be aware, as seen here, Trametinib and Dabrafenib can cause higher blood sugars, which seems to be the case for your dad. It is important that his specialist team are aware of this so they can help manage these during his treatment. They will want to regularly check blood sugar levels and may want to adjust diabetic medication to stabilise the levels. It is also important to let them know if he suddenly becomes more thirsty and starts passing water more frequently.

He should eat a well balanced and healthy diet as much as possible as suggested here by Diabetes UK.

Diabetes UK alongside Macmillan have produced a pdf booklet about diabetes and cancer that can been seen at this link or ordered through Macmillan themselves.

I hope this is helpful but please get back if you have more questions. Our nurse helpline number is 0808 800 4040, Mon-Fri 9-5 if you ever wish to speak over the phone.

    All the best

    Naomi
