Raised platelets

Hello,

About a month ago I had a blood test done due to some chest and stomach pain I was getting (that's gone now) and the receptionist told me my platelets were raised and that the doctor advised I do a repeat blood test in 6 weeks (in May) and to take vitamin D everyone day.

I'm trying not to think about it too much and I was too concerned until I googled raised platelets (always a mistake to Google things, I know!) but now im worried I may have Essenrial Thrombocythemia as I have some symptoms (occasionally headaches and dizziness, tiredness, nosebleeds, heavy periods). I can't seem to find a lot of info on this and I'm concerned it's life threatening?

Also concerned about leukemia as well due to the same symptoms (fatigue, paleness, Petechiae), but I know these things can also be sign of iron deficent (cold hands and feet, paleness, fatigue). I'm 27 years old and none of these things seem to be very common for people in my age group.

I'm just a bit all over the place and trying not to freak out until my next blood test, just hoping someone could shed some light on this? Has anyone been through the same?

Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can understand that the uncertainty can be worrying. We can't diagnose you but try if you can to not let your mind run away with you.

If your doctor thought that your symptoms were more serious then they would have organised further tests straight away or a referral to a haematologist ( a doctor who specialises in blood disorders). It may have been that your platelets were not raised by very much which is why your doctor decided to repeat the test in six weeks.

Try not to look at the internet as it will not help diagnose you. Doctors have guidelines when patients present with symptoms and I am sure that if they are still raised at your next blood test then your doctor will arrange further tests.

If any of your symptoms of course get worse within that time then don't hesitate in going back to the doctor. You may find the following information helpful about getting the most from your GP's appointment here

    I hope this helps.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
