Colposcopy delayed

I have been diagnosed with HPV with low grade changes to cells. I was referred for a colposcopy mid Feb to be within 4 weeks but on asking there are long delays so could be months. I don't know how long I have had this as my last smear was 6 years ago as over 60 . When or should I worry about this ?

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation and the long wait for your appointment.

Unfortunately because of Covid there have been delays. They have also probably decided to triage the patients being seen in the clinic,  so those with higher grades may be being seen earlier but I can't be sure.

For low grade changes to turn in to cancer can take many years sometimes 10-20 years if they ever do.  Often with low grade changes the colposcopist will look at the area involved and not do any treatment but I can understand that it is important that it is looked at and the results confirmed.

The HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is responsible for causing changes in the cells, normally your own immunity will get on top of this virus but this may take two years or sometimes even longer. There is nothing that you can do to help this process other then trying to live a healthy life style and getting plenty of sleep.

Hopefully as time goes on the colposcopy clinic will catch up with it's appointments. I would try and ring regularly to see if there are any cancellations. There are many occasions when women are unable to make their appointments.

If you feel after a few weeks that you haven't received an appointment you could contact PALS (Patients Advice and Liaison Service) here

They may be able to look in to it for you.

You have posted in ask the nurses but if you post on another thread you may here of other women's experiences.

You may also find it helpful to join Jo's Trust online chatline to explain what is happening with you. Have a look here

If you want to ring and chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then you are more then welcome to do so.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine
