Swollen neck lymphnode child

Hi

My daughter age 9 shown me one fairly large lymph node on the side of her neck that was visible to see. This was around October 21. After Christmas we went to the GP as more nodes had erupted.  They ran bloods, all was clear for infections, glandular fever ect. She complains of Intermittent stomach ache and suffers with mouth ulcers. She now has alot of nodes some.big, some small, some.visible, some not.

They sent her for an ultrasound and results came back satisfactory. This has not given me a clear mind. This hasn't settled me at all.

Should this be a reasonable result. Should I totally be ruling out cancer based on the ultrasound and look down other avenues based on the tummy pains?

I asked the GP if the ultrasound would rule out the Big C and he said yes. But now it's happened i still can't settle. I now have to wait 2 weeks for a telephone app with the GP and that's because I made the app as I want to request further Investigation other wise They would have just left it as that with no more explanation for her neck lumps.

Please share your ultrasound stories. Even if it sound scary. I need to know If I should still be worrying.

Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you are worried about your daughter and these ongoing raised lymph nodes she seems to have. Ongoing symptoms can cause a lot of anxiety, especially when it's to do with your child.

I'm afraid as nurses we are unable to diagnose or tell anyone if anything is the matter. But it is good that your daughter’s ultrasound came back clear. You would normally expect something abnormal to show up if something sinister was going on. If her doctor suspected cancer they would have discussed this with you.

Swollen lymph nodes are common in children especially as their immune system is developing and they are exposed to coughs and colds and other viruses. It isn't unusual for these to remain swollen for many years and doesn't usually cause the child any harm. This condition is known as reactive lymphadenopathy. You can read more about this on an NHS website here.

Hopefully people will come along and share their experiences with you, as support like this can be invaluable. But it’s important to bear in mind that even if there are other people who have experienced similar things to your daughter, I’m not sure that their experience will shed much light about what is going on with her.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you for replying back to me. It is reassuring to hear the an ultrasound would likely detect something.

Her GP has reffered her to the general peadiatric team at the hospital.

She has since found swollen nodes on both sides if her groin.

Her tummy pains are above the naval under the ribs so her GP has said that also sounds like glands.

Given the new nodes and no improvement in tummy pains and mouth ulcers, unfortunately I am ewualkt as worried as I was before. It could be months untill she has an appointment at the hospital.

Should I advise the GP of new findings in her groin?

    Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your further post,

I think if you are worrying, then speak with the GP again, who can assess this, and advise you further.

    Best wishes,
