Waiting for Breast MRI results

Hi

I've recently had a mammogram and ultrasound after noticing a small indentation above my left breast.  The Consultant sent me for an MRI and he said 'maybe a biopsy'.  I had the MRI last Wednesday but no biopsy was mentioned.  I not sure what to think, is it a good or bad thing that I didn't have a biopsy?   I am extremely worried and anxious about it all. I contacted my Consultant's Secretary this morning, she said my case would be discussed in the morning and she would contact me on Thursday with an appointment.  Do they always make an appointment to discuss even if nothing shows on the MRI? Just worried sick.  Not sure how it all works.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

Waiting for the results of tests can be a very anxious time.

As I am sure you are aware we can't second guess what the doctor is going to say to you on Thursday.

All suspected cancer patients are formally discussed in an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) meeting. All the doctors involved in your care meet to discuss your case. Each case is treated individually so I can't say for sure what they are going to say. They may want advice from other members of the team about the indented area and whether they need to biopsy it or whether they have enough information from the MRI.

Try not to think too far ahead until you know more which I know is easier said then done.

If at any time you want to chat this through with one of the nurses on the helpline then do give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the Best,

    Catherine

  • Thanks for your reply, I'm just very nervous about what they are going to say as I'm sure everyone is. When I went for the Ultrasound the Radiographer said he would suggest a biopsy is done at the same time as the MRI but as I said a biopsy was never mentioned. I'll wait and see what they say on Thursday.

    Thanks
