Telephone consultant consultation after fit test

Hi everyone, looking for abit of advice. I went to my GP as I had blood in my poo that was not going away. I ignored it for months before going to the doctor. Anyway she arranged for me to get a fit test which I did and got a reply within about 2 weeks to say a telephone consultation has been arranged for a consultant surgeon call me. No other explanation. No indication if results. He is calling me next week. I used to run a lot but dont have a lot of energy but apart from that I am in good health. What do u think?

  • Hello there

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you are having and appreciate this call back following your fit test must be a worry.

As I am sure you are aware a fit test is able to check for blood in the poo, depending on the levels of blood found, further tests may be needed to find out what the cause of the bleeding may be. Usually a colonoscopy is the next test of choice and depending on the results the consultant calling you will discuss this with you.

Not all blood in poo is caused by bowel cancer and there could be other causes but a colonoscopy where a camera is passed through the bowel is able to check the bowel lining out and allow for biopsies (tissue samples) to be taken and examined under a microscope to make a diagnosis.

Unfortunately no one here can say what is going on for you and it is a matter of waiting, which I understand is not easy, but hopefully you will have a better idea about what is going on soon.

Do get back if you have further questions or give us a call on 0808 800 4040 Mon-Fri 9-5 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi,

Thank you so much for your reply, its much appreciated.  Receiveing the letter with no explaination of the FIT test results and only advising of a consultation with a surgeon made me more anxious.

    Thanks again :)

  • I have attended A&E twice with severe abdo pain. The first time I was admitted and given a CT scan and a camera down my throat. They found nothing. I had to go back to A&E 2 weeks later as I was in agony and couldn't stand up because of the pain This time my bloods showed my enzymes were raised which could indicate stones but I was refused a CT because I just had one two weeks previous. The first time in A&E after my discharge I was sent a Qfit test through the door and I  done the test on the 7/9/222. I hadn't heard anything so just assumed the test was fine. On Saturday the 8/10/22 I got a letter saying my test was positive. I'm worried sick . I phoned my consultants secretary today and she was so rude

  • Hello Nicnav46 and thanks for posting,

You probably know that a positive Quantitative Faecal Immunochemical Test (qFIT) means that some hidden blood has been found in the poo but the test doesn't identify the cause of the bleeding. This bleeding can occur for a number of reasons and cancer is by no means the only explanation. But I can appreciate that any test outside of the normal range can cause worry.

I am sorry that you haven't been able to speak to a doctor yet about this result to put it in context for you, but I hope you are able to soon. In the meantime, you are welcome to give us a call if you want to talk anything over. Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and we are around weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
