Confused about Mum - skin cancer

Hi there -

My mum has previously had a melanoma on her leg many years ago and has had many basal cell cancers on her face unfortunately as well over the past few years that have been removed.

She has had a large area on her nostril that hasn't looked right for a long time and she was also fairly certain it was cancerous given her previous experience.

What I'm trying to understand is what is going on now. She went to the hospital for a first examination of it and then the next day she was called back in to see them urgently so she was back in less than 48 hours after the first appointment. From what I can make out she hasn't had a biopsy but they've confirmed it's melanoma on her face this time and not a basal cell. Is that possible to confirm without a biopsy?

She's said they are going to call her back in as soon as possible for removal and also for a skin graft from either in front or behind her ear.

I'm trying to get a full sense of what might be happening to support her as she's looking for reassurance but it's difficult without being at the appointments to hear things first hand.

- Are they likely to say this is a melanoma without a biopsy?

- What is the recovery like for an operation like this?

- Will they be looking to see the potential that this has spread? And is this more likely given she has had numerous skin cancers before?

Thanks so much

  • Hello scout27 and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your mum and can understand you wanting to support her.

I don't think the specialist would say this was a melanoma unless they were very sure, but a biopsy would usually be taken to confirm their impression.

I wonder if there is a reason for not taking a biopsy?  In an outpatient clinic they would usually do what is called an excisional biopsy to take away all of a suspected melanoma in one go under local anaesthetic. This would be if the suspected melanoma was in an accessible place, but with something on the nostril that might be tricky. As the doctors have said they want to do a skin graft this might be why a biopsy hasn't been done yet;  a skin graft makes it a less straightforward procedure and I think they tend to be done under a general anaesthetic.

Unfortunately I am not sure what the plan is, so I can't really say what the likely recovery time will be, I think your mum will need to get this information from the hospital team treating her.

I am also unsure what they will do to check for the melanoma spreading. I think this will probably depend on the situation and how likely it is that the melanoma might have spread already which is linked to how deep it is, so again, your mum will need to ask her hospital doctors what they think is best in her circumstances. I don't think a melanoma would be any more likely to spread because someone has had other skin cancers before.
