  • Hello lady-penelope and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you have recently been told you have breast cancer. I can imagine this is a stressful time.

Some breast cancer cells have receptors for a protein called HER2. HER2 makes breast cancer cells grow and divide. These breast cancers are called HER2 positive cancers, but most breast cancers are HER2 negative. HER2 positive breast cancers can be treated with targeted medicines. These medicines can block the HER2 receptor to stop it from working. So testing for HER2 helps the doctors to decide whether or not someone needs this sort of targeted treatment.

The stage of a cancer is a way for doctors to describe its size and extent, for example if the cancer has travelled to any lymph nodes. And the grade refers to how similar or not a cancer cell is to a normal cell - this can give the doctors some idea of how a cancer might behave.

Before they can plan treatment doctors need to know as much as possible about any cancer to try and predict how it might behave and what sort of treatments would be best. From what you say, you have already been told this is a potentially aggressive cancer which is probably because of the grade 3 assessment. And as the doctors seem to be thinking your cancer is a stage 3,  I expect this will have something to with the fact that there is cancer in some lymph nodes. If you want to read more about the types, stages and grades of breast cancers you can go to our website by clicking here

Hopefully when you see the oncologist on Monday they will be able to tell you a bit more about your situation and explain your treatment.

I think it would be a good idea to ask whoever took your coil out if it is ok to still be bleeding now, I'm afraid I don't know if this is normal or not.

If you want to talk anything over please do give us a call on Freephone 0808 800 4040, we are here from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
