Thick mucus red and brown from anus

( Female 28 )Hi just wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything like this before

Basically few weeks ago I started to notice when I was having bowel movement there was brown mucus and bright red blood mixed in I phoned my Doctor straight away he seen me felt my stomach and sent me for bloods to check everything I aslo sent stool sample of to see if there was a infection but come back negative I’ve just recovered from covid so I wasn’t able to have my bloods done last week I’m going this week at some point wants my tests is completely negative for covid .

Every morning I wake up I have the worst stomach cramps and I basically need to go the toilet straight away this morning it happened again and I keep passing thick red mucus along with  Diarrhea I’ve had diarrhea sorry TMI! For 4 days now but not sure if that is linked to me having covid but I know the covid wouldn’t cause thick red mucus that’s my worry Im calling doctor back tomorrow morning as last week he did say he will send me in to have a camera to see what’s causing the bleeding I did have a baby 12 weeks ago but that was via c section I also have suffered with   Hemorrhoids  in both my Pg’s but this is getting alarming now as I’ve never had anything like this happen to me before sometimes the mucus can be thick brown or red

Basically just wondering if anyone has had anything like this before ? I can’t stop googling and I know I shouldn’t but my mind is doing over time  thinking the worst about everything my stomach constantly makes Loud noises all day long even when I’ve eat and not hungry

I know I can’t get diagnoses on here I’m just wondering if anyone has dealt with anything similar as it’s driving me insane I should get some answers in the next 2 weeks with bloods and hopefully colonoscopy.

  • Hi,

My husband had fatigue and then started having stomach pains and passing mucus and blood during most bowel movements for 6 months. Blood tests and everything else came back fine but during his colonoscopy they found polyps and colitis which we are now awaiting biopsy results for as likely a IBD such as crohns or ulcerative colitis.

Thankfully at your age the likely hood of it being cancer is very low and there are many other things which can cause your symptoms.

Deep breaths and stay off of Dr Google as during his investigations after reading online I was 100% it was bowel cancer.

Hope they get to the bottom of it quickly and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi thank you so much hope your husband is okay and glad it's not the C word..

this has only been happening the last few weeks I have got the ball rolling seen GP and going for bloods this week and then I'll more than lightly have colonoscopy to get a real answer to what is going on it's the brown and red thick mucus I do not like every morning I wake up I get the urge I need the toilet with bad stomach cramps it's awful can I ask did your husband have the thick brown mucus ? Yes I know I'm staying away from google as it just points to the C word and I'm losing my mind I have 20 month old and 13 week old x

  • Long term Covid can cause digestive issues. I am having more symptoms after Covid than i did with it.

  • I was getting this before covid though also my stomach makes very loud noises

  • Can I ask what symptoms you've been experiencing after covid ?

  • Personally i am having breathing problems and currently on steroids. If they don't work i have to make another appointment. But i know Covid can cause digestion problems after the virus has passed.

  • My husband did have covid and then his symptoms started a few months later however I do not know if the symptoms have any relation to each other however he never had any digestive issues before. He did initially have very bad fatigue and was first diagnosed with long covid, it wasn't until after he started passing blood that they considered it maybe related to his bowels.

He did indeed have similar sounding mucus, generally mixed with blood and generally first thing in the morning and then throughout the day he said it was less noticeable.

It is a very scary thing to go through so I can understand how you feel. I really hope that with a recent pregnancy that it is just hemeroids as I have seen that to be the outcome online for many people.

  • Hello Lo 12 and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your worry but it does seem that your GP is reassuringly on the ball by requesting the blood test and looking to see if you need to have a colonoscopy.

I am afraid that no one here can tell you what is the matter and searching online will come up with many reasons, which will always include cancer. So please stop searching and remember that at your age bowel cancer is unusual. The fact is that there are many reasons why people could have the symptoms you have.

In the meantime if you are concerned about your health before you get the result of your tests do go back and talk with your GP.

I hope you have support at home and that you will be okay.

    Take care,

    Caroline
