Why scan?

Hi,

I just wanted to ask a question about the reason behind requesting a scan.  I'm nine years post menopause and, following a second event of post menopausal bleeding in a year, an endometrial biopsy found I have non atypical hyperplasia of the endometrium.  A scan at the same time however identified an enlarged ovary measuring 10cm.  I was told that, given my history, that a hysterectomy would be my best option going forward. I also had an elevated CA125 reading of 83.  Why then, when surgery is pretty much the way forward, would a full scan of Thorax, abdomen and pelvis with contrast be required?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello JM and thanks for posting,

I think the CT scan is probably just a way of the doctors getting as fuller picture as they can about your situation before they operate to help them to plan your surgery. I expect it is a routine thing but do ask them why they want you to have it when you have the chance.

Please give us a call if you want to talk anything over. We are here weekdays 9-5 and the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,

    Julia
