swollen gland in neck- 4 year old

My 3 nearly 4 year old son has a swollen lymph node in his neck anbout 1.5x 1.5 cm, It has been then for over a year now. He had it ultrasound at that time and they said it was okay and just swollen lymph node. Its still there now, hard ish, moveable and none painful. Quite noticable as people always point it out. I took him GP today as he is a little hard of hearing- happened over past 6 months. Ears okay- sending him for audiology appointment. Hehas had chicken pox recently, so has alot of swollen lands under his chin, behing his ear and in his neck. Dr noticed them and said they were quitet big. She said come back for bloods in 4 weeks if theyve not gone down. So of course now im worried sick its lymphoma! hes well otherwise, sweaty at night but not soaked.

Please can someone give soem advice/ simular situations- please be hoenst

Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry you are worried about your son and these ongoing raised lymph nodes he seems to have. Ongoing symptoms can cause a lot of anxiety, especially when it's to do with your child.

It is good that his ultrasound came back clear. You would normally expect something abnormal to show up if something sinister was going on. It's not unusual for doctors to order blood tests in a few weeks’ time. They want to check that your son’s recent infection has cleared. If your doctor suspected lymphoma they would have discussed this with you.

Small swollen lymph nodes are common in young children especially as their immune system is developing and they are exposed to coughs and colds and other viruses. It isn't unusual for these to remain swollen for many years and doesn't usually cause the child any harm. This condition is known as reactive lymphadenopathy.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.
